In the depths of the Caribbean Sea in Santa Marta, Colombia, Carlo, an Italian born in Rome passionate about the ocean, its mysteries, and its charms, was preparing to become a Reef Ranger. His mission was to learn everything he needed to know about marine ecosystems, especially coral reefs, to understand how to care for, preserve, and monitor them.
The course began under the guidance of the Sistema Azul Foundation, who immersed Carlo in all the necessary knowledge to learn about the diverse array of reef species and their interconnected ecosystems. From sponges to corals and fishes, Carlo gained a deeper understanding of how these organisms coexist and thrive beneath the waves. After several days of learning in his classes and diving into the depths to apply what he learned, Carlo had the opportunity to witness a magical event: the rare phenomenon of coral spawning. This spectacle underscored the fragility and resilience of these underwater ecosystems, leaving Carlo and others who had the fortune to witness it, speechless, and putting the entire course into perspective.

In addition to learning all this, our new Reef Ranger, along with the Proyecto Marea Recicla, actively participated in hands-on initiatives to protect the ocean environment. Equipped with specialized training, Carlo honed his skills in identifying and removing marine debris during dedicated cleanup dives. These experiences not only reinforced the importance of responsible diving practices but also empowered Carlo to make a tangible difference in preserving marine habitats. Participating in group dives to clean the beaches of Taganga further solidified Carlo's commitment to environmental stewardship. By combining his passion for diving with a sense of purposeful action, Carlo exemplified the role that individuals can play in safeguarding our oceans for future generations.

At Reef Support, we know that each experience to become a Reef Ranger is unique, and Carlo's was undoubtedly memorable and transformative! Beyond honing his diving skills and expanding his knowledge of marine life, Carlo emerged from the program with a profound appreciation for the interconnectedness of all life beneath the waves. The program not only enriched Carlo's understanding of the ocean but also instilled in him a sense of responsibility to protect and preserve its fragile ecosystems.
Carlo's experience proves to us that everyone can be part of the change to a better world, that we all can and have the obligation to care for our oceans, but above all, that one doesn't have to be a scientist or a biologist to generate a truly positive impact on these ecosystems.
